Accuro
Originally set up by parents of children with a disability, your support will help us continue providing care and support through our schemes which are briefly explained below.
Shared Care - Shared care provides family based short term breaks for children and adults who have learning and/or physical disabilities, and sensory disabilities.
Family Support Work - This support service is designed for children to be cared for within the home. It is organised by a qualified co-ordinator and all Support Workers are fully paid members of staff. It is similar in many ways to that of the Shared Care Scheme but is classified as domiciliary care as the child is supported within the home environment.
Adult Friendship - The scheme supports adults with learning and/or physical disabilities by supporting with1:1 friendships and group activities.
Summer Holiday Scheme - Every year we run a Summer Holiday Scheme which provides leisure activities for young people with special needs when schools are closed during July and August. This is done on a 1:1 befriending basis. A family support worker will work with the young person to plan activities that they would like to do. This could include activities such as going to the cinema, bowling or a walk to the local park. This has the additional benefit of providing much needed respite care. Last year we provided this service for 59 families across Essex with an average of 6 sessions each for 3 hours per session. All the staff we recruit to help run the scheme have previous relevant experience and are CRB checked.
Under 19s - Accuro created this scheme, which is based in Uttlesford, to create leisure and social opportunities for young people with disabilities between the ages of 14 to 19 years. It does this by providing a weekly social club based in Saffron Walden, Essex, a 1:1 befriending scheme, groups outings and activities and an annual holiday
Our History
Harlow Shared Care (HSC) was set up in 1984 by a group of parents of children with a disability who were dissatisfied with the services that were available to them. They were concerned about the absence of available, flexible respite care & hence the first service they established was a Shared Care scheme. In 1995 HSC registered as a charity with the Charity Commission and in 2003 also became a limited company.SNoCaP (Special Needs of Children & Parents) had a very similar beginning and was formed primarily by a group of parents living in the Epping Forest area in 1994. It also established a shared care service which, in 2002, merged with the services being provided by HSC. ResCU (Respite Care in Uttlesford) was also formed in 1984, again by parents & again with the aim of providing appropriate respite care for children/adults with a disability & their families. In July 2005 the services that ResCU had introduced by that time merged with HSC & SNoCaP to form Accuro. The new organisation now provides a range of services in West Essex, which includes Harlow, Epping and the Uttlesford District.
