NWY ASBAH

NWY ASBAH  The North & West Yorkshire Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus (NWY ASBAH) is a registered charity supporting children, adults and families with hydrocephalus and or spina bifida in North & West Yorkshire.

By supporting, informing, and campaigning the Association is continuing to help promote individual choice, control, and quality of life for all the people who use our services.

What is Spina Bifida?
Spina bifida occurs early in pregnancy and causes damage to the spinal cord and nerves which may result in paralysis below the level of the fault. Many people with spina bifida also have hydrocephalus.

What is Hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is caused by a build up of fluid in the ventricles of the brain. It can occur in premature babies, after meningitis, a head injury, a stroke or in association with spina bifida.
Hydrocephalus can lead to problems with concentration, reasoning and short term memory. Some people will have difficulties with co-ordination, motivation, and organisational skills.

We believe that everyone with spina bifida or hydrocephalus has the ability to get the most out of life

We are affiliated with the National Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (ASBAH), but we are a charity in our own right with our own charity number and we have to raise our own funds for our work. We have very recently expanded our area to include areas where unfortunately the local associations were unable to go on due to lack of support and/or funding
